Creative Environment

Week 10 Reading: Creativity in Time and Space

When creating something, you always have to think about your audience and how you want your work to communicate to readers or viewers. As a creator you also have to think about the beliefs and values you hold and what you stand by, don’t do something if you feel it isn’t right for you. Also think about the things around you (your world) and how that can help you communicate your creative practice to the audience.

To find or generate the right context for our work, we can either experiment/ try new things we haven’t already done. Do our own research to get some inspiration, use the process of elimination or collaborate with others to be able to generate ideas of the right context for your work. We can explore different context of our work by being hands on and seeing our work in different places to get an idea if that really works for your project. For example, if you are trying to come up with a design of a fitness poster for the upcoming joggers/trainers and you want to advertise that and draw the attention of fitness enthusiasts. You would then try to think where you could put that poster for people who are interested in fitness. You would think may be to advertise it at bus stops, on the side of buses, where do people run and walk? Where are the most popular places for people to be? By thinking about these things and questioning our thoughts we then can do further research to be able to generate these ideas and which would be more successful than the other.

When collaborating amongst a group of your peers, there will always be people who come from different backgrounds and different walks of life. Some may have a different understanding of something particular you are working on which then can generate different ideas amongst a group.

Collaborating is very efficient and successful in the creative process as well as giving you a broader understanding. As discussed in the article Creativity in Time and Space, many people who come from a diverse of fields such as, music, architecture, art and many more, they all contain common characteristics which they then can work and develop skills off one another (Törnqvist, 2004). By coming together and collaborating it helps to develop one’s creative capacity (Törnqvist, 2004). By having such a diverse group of people who come from different fields, with a creative mind, can change society in such a spectacular way (Törnqvist, 2004). Everyone has different ways of thinking, if we all thought the same way, most things would be boring and there would be no point collaborating with others.

Creativity & Technology

Week 6 Reading: The Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Use Cases

There are many fascinating technologies emerging into todays society and AR is one of them. We live in an era today were AR is increasingly incorporated in our daily life routines.

AR is everywhere around us and sometimes we don’t even realise it’s happening. An application of AR that I have experienced is navigation/GPS that I use from getting to point A to B. This is something I use quite frequently on my mobile with my location.

In the article Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Use Cases, it discusses areas that relate to my study and future employment which is Graphic Design. It included the following; 3D modelling and design, which will help to create or envision what the product will be like in reality and how effective it may be (Downey, 2016).  Having the ability to be in a collaboration with a design project, so if everyone is in different states or in a different country, you’ll be able to see each other and to physically show your ideas rather than having to email and call back and forth (Downey, 2016). Monitoring, being able to keep up with new ideas and trends around you, which is crucial when it comes to graphic design because you are constantly trying to create new ideas (Downey, 2016). Past interaction recall, this allows people to back track conversations that they have had with others/clients, which will help enormously in design if you are doing a job for a client (Downey, 2016). Blue prints and models, having the ability to visualise a design on a 3D AR projection rather than paper, which is a great thing when designing a logo or a billboard poster, having the ability to see the end product (Downey, 2016). Personalisation and targeting, everyone tends to see ads that are purposely targeted at them. It all depends on your location and items that you have searched up on your laptop or mobile phone. For example, I like to look on a website that’s called ASOS which is a shop online, once I’ve exited that website I tend to see pop up adverts of an item I was interested in all over my Facebook feed (Downey,2016). Personalisation and targeting is incorporated with graphic design because the adverts that pop up are designed to draw your attention and to capture your interest to influence you.

When envisioning another particular AR application, the thing that comes to mind is the idea of prototyping which was already discussed in the article by Downey. I believe that this will be very beneficial for me professionally and in the future. It will help me with designing my designs so that I can create them how they want to be used. For example, if a client asked me to design a logo for their own business and they wanted it to be multi used. Then by having the AR application for prototyping it will allow me to create a logo that suits business cards, pens, bottles, shirts, coffee cups, hats and many more.

Overall AR applications are ever-growing in today’s society, it helps with many projects and is beneficial in many occupations.

Creative Communities

Week 5 Reading: Coming home; Community, Creativity and Consciousness

This week we had to choose between discussing, 1.  Identifying 2 or more scenes in movies, books or games that have evoked a powerful emotion or 2. What role do the arts play in developing community and your position on the relationship and an example of a creative community and what maintains it. I personally have chosen to discuss number 2 for this weeks reading response.

The role of Arts and Culture play a huge part in a developing community. Culture can help strengthen an individual’s values and beliefs. It also helps to engage with others who may have a different perspective on cultural values, overall it helps develop a healthy community and able to learn from a diverse group of people. The Arts include everything from, architecture, graphic design, film, media, dance, music, photography and many more. Through Arts it allows new relations to develop within a community and to explore different ideas. Arts and Culture can help shape a developing community and its identity.

A community is made up of many individuals, those individuals may have similar beliefs, values, interests, goals and skills. The Arts across the world all have very strong communities ‘members of communities must work with others’ (Charles and Samples, 2004). A community can be strengthened by the bonds/ relationships of the individuals within it. I believe that the Arts have brought many people together because of the common interest and the common sense of purpose that can create a sense of belonging (Charles and Samples, 2004). If we feel that we belong, we feel that we are apart of a broader entity. Art can bring people together from all walks of life which has potential to cross barriers of age, race, gender and religion. Regardless of individuals personal differences, art has the power to bring everyone together and to create strong connections. It is these that give a sense of belonging, that contribute to a sense of community.

An example of a creative community is the Colosoul Inc. that I have recently come across a few months ago that I like to read. It is a non – profit magazine based in Subiaco that allows creative minds come together and create amazing things. It’s a community where you can further develop your skills and gain experience in a number of different industries which include within the arts and media area. Go check out more of their work here: https://www.colosoul.com.au . This community has a sense of ‘openness’, they are open to new ideas and concepts (Charles and Samples, 2004). What created this community was young adults wanting to get involved and having more experience is their chosen industry which is volunteer work. As discussed in the article, ‘community requires participation and commitment’ and this is what Colosoul is about, working in a team and sharing ideas with one another (Charles and Samples, 2004). Overall this creative community have a shared purpose, a willingness to accomplish tasks that benefit the creative industries (Charles and Samples, 2004).

Creative Personality

Week 2 Reading: The Creative Personality

In week 2 in Creativity: Theory, Practice & History. We were introduced to the personality of a creative personality of a creator. The reading that was given to us was The Creative Personality by Csikszentmihalyi, Mihaly (1996).

This particular reading discussed the different characteristics a creator possesses, Csikszentmihalyi, M mentioned that creative people “Are remarkable for their ability to adapt to almost any situation and to make do with whatever is at hand to reach their goals” (1996). Creative personalities are able to come up with a range of ideas that can create a world of difference in society which can challenge the norms in today’s society. By having a creative personality there will be times where you think you need to be different from others, but this can then create a negative outcome in your work, which then can lead to a negative impulse in your work (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996). However, taking risks and to also break out of the safety of tradition is also necessary when producing creative projects (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996). In this article the author came up with 10 different personality traits a creative individual holds which he has researched for over 30 years, instead of them being an ‘individual’ they are a ‘multitude’ (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996).

For this weeks question I chose, name an individual who you consider to be extremely creative and what lead me to this decision. When I first looked at this question I kept asking myself, who do I think is an extremely creative person in their own work. For a few years now I have looked up to Zoe Sugg known as Zoella, she is a blogger and YouTuber doing travel, lifestyle, fashion and beauty.

Zoe Sugg

Is a creative and social media influence, Zoe started out creating a YouTube channel in December 2009 at the age of 19. Her first video that she posted was 60 things in my bedroom she then has gone on to upload over 250 videos (Berryman & Kavka, 2017). Most of her videos are about Fashion, Lifestyle, Beauty and Travel, with over 11 million subscribers. Zoe is one of the largest influencers on social media today, to complement products, sharing tips as well as teaching technical skills (Berryman & Kavka, 2017).

Zoe In 2015 Zoe had a wax figure made of her at Madame Tussauds, London. When I have extra time, I enjoy sitting down watching her latest videos as well as reading her blogs on her website, she inspires me to start-up my own blog about lifestyle and travel and even fashion. I find her extremely creative because she has a great passion for what she is doing on her social media platforms. As discussed in the creative personality by Csikszentmihalyi, Mihaly (1996), creative people are humble and proud at the same time. Zoe Sugg is a passionate creator, especially when it comes to making her own beauty products, as Csikszentmihalyi discussed you need to take risks and break out of tradition.

Overall Csikszentmihalyi describes how every creative personality is like out there in the creative industries. Some go against social norms, step outside of their comfort zone and push the boundaries. If you want to be interesting in your work you can’t play safe (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996).
